The Sunday Telegraph and the Daily Mail is reporting that the Chancellor is considering issuing war bonds. I have been urging the Chancellor to do this for almost eighteen months on the Treasury Committee, in meetings with Ministers and speaking in the Chamber.

I have introduced the government to the research of outstanding academics in this space such as Paolo Surico. His work was covered here last week: Does defence spending boost the economy?

This policy has also been adopted by the Liberal Democrats. This could be an important moment for the country because, if the spending is focused on defence  research and development and implemented correctly, it could raise the most effective driver  of long term economic growth (R&D) and help finally end the economic stagnation which we have experienced since 2008. It could raise our defence spending to 3% of GDP and so, with an unreliable US, protect the free world together with our Commonwealth and European allies.
