Hannah Byrne, from Horley, tragically lost her life on the first night of her holiday in Corfu aged 22. An inquest into her death was delayed for a fifth time because the Greek police still haven’t finished their investigation three years later. Ed Davey and I met with Hannah’s family, spoke with the BBC, and called on the Greek authorities to complete their investigation and the Foreign Office to support so her family can finally get answers and grieve their daughter.

The unauthorised mountain of waste by Dorking West station is still there, even though the deadline to clear it has passed. I wrote to the Environment Agency three times in the last year after people raised environmental concerns and its proximity to a school. I’m glad the environmental permit has been revoked, but those responsible should now pay for the clean-up. 

The government’s planning inspectorate has now told me that they have rejected the site owner’s appeal on Surrey County Council’s enforcement notice at the waste site by Dorking West station. I will be writing to the County Council, Environment Agency and Mole Valley District Council asking what steps they are taking, in light of this news, to clear the site and stop all illegal operations.

Dorking needs a fast train once a day for commuters, which doesn’t impact stations up the line. 1,900 people signed my petition asking for this. South Western Railway told me they will look into it. I will also be meeting with the Rail Minister next month.

Bookham only has one train per hour to London since the pandemic. I asked South Western Railway for more trains to stop there. They told me they will look at this after a public consultation on timetable changes in the Autumn.

Unauthorised land developments are a challenge in Surrey. A chronic shortage of authorised sites means many Gypsy and Traveller communities have no lawful place to live, so some developments are built outside planning regulations. This creates conflict between police, councils and locals. I am urging the government, alongside Al Pinkerton MP, to deliver a coordinated national response.
